What are Jungle Japes? The term literally suggests a joke jungle, a jungle mocked. “Jungle Japes” refers to a level in Donkey Kong 64 (1999). This level, the first in the game, is modeled on the first level in Donkey Kong Country (1994). The level is a representation of a paradise-like jungle, the home of Donkey Kong and his kin. This sort of representation, this jungle image, is not unique to the Donkey Kong series, but the trope of a false virtual jungle, has come to bear this catchy name.
